A Compassionate, Trauma-Informed Approach to Therapy

Choosing a therapist is an important decision. More than credentials or treatment approaches, it is about finding someone with whom you feel understood, respected, and safe enough to explore the experiences that have shaped your life.

I believe meaningful therapy begins with a genuine human relationship built on curiosity, compassion, and trust. My goal is to create a space where you feel accepted as you are while supporting you toward lasting growth and healing.

I’ve had the privilege of working with adults navigating the lasting effects of overwhelming experiences, including trauma, anxiety, grief, and relationship difficulties. Whether this is your first experience with therapy or you’ve worked with other therapists before, my hope is that our work together helps you reconnect with your strengths, deepen your self-understanding, and build a life that feels more authentic and fulfilling.

My Philosophy

One lesson has consistently guided my work throughout my career:

People Make Sense.

Even when our thoughts, emotions, or behaviors feel confusing, they usually developed for understandable reasons.

Many of the patterns people struggle with today once helped them adapt to difficult circumstances. Anxiety, emotional withdrawal, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or difficulty trusting others often began as creative ways of surviving environments that felt unsafe, unpredictable, or emotionally overwhelming.

Rather than asking,

“What’s wrong with you?”

I believe a more compassionate question is,

“What happened, and how did you learn to survive?”

Healing often begins when self-judgment is replaced with curiosity, understanding, and self-compassion.

Over the years, I’ve come to believe that lasting change rarely comes from advice alone. It develops through a therapeutic relationship in which people feel genuinely seen, understood, and safe enough to explore experiences they may have carried alone for many years. That belief continues to guide every aspect of my work.

My Approach to Therapy

Every person brings a unique history, different strengths, and different hopes for therapy.

Because of this, I don’t believe in applying the same approach to everyone.

Instead, therapy becomes a collaborative process of understanding your experiences, recognizing the adaptations that once helped you survive, and discovering new ways of relating to yourself, your emotions, and the people around you.

My role is not to tell you who you should become.

It is to help you reconnect with who you already are beneath the protective patterns that were once necessary.

My work draws from a range of evidence-based and trauma-informed approaches, always guided by your individual needs, experiences, and goals.

Professional Background

I am Adrian J. Connolly, MA, LCPC, LPC, a licensed professional counselor providing psychotherapy to adolescents, adults, and couples.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked in a variety of clinical settings with individuals facing emotional, relational, and psychological challenges. Over time, I found myself increasingly drawn to helping adults recover from the lasting effects of trauma and adversity. Today, my practice focuses primarily on Complex PTSD, dissociation, anxiety, attachment-related difficulties, and relationship challenges.

I am licensed to provide psychotherapy in:

  • Washington, DC
  • Maryland
  • Virginia

I offer both in-person therapy in Washington, DC, and secure online therapy throughout these jurisdictions.

What You Can Expect

Beginning therapy can feel vulnerable.

Many people worry about saying the “wrong” thing or wonder whether their experiences are significant enough to talk about.

Therapy can become a place where you no longer feel you have to perform, have all the answers, or carry everything on your own.

Together, we’ll work to understand the patterns that have shaped your life, develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself, strengthen emotional resilience, and move toward the life you want to build.

Therapy unfolds at a pace that feels manageable while honoring both your strengths and your capacity for growth.

A Little More About Me

Although therapy naturally focuses on your life rather than mine, I believe it can be helpful to know something about the person sitting across from you.

I remain committed to ongoing professional learning, particularly in the areas of trauma, attachment, neuroscience, and psychotherapy. Continuing education allows me to integrate current research with approaches that remain grounded in genuine human connection.

Outside of my clinical work, I enjoy walking, exercising, reading, and spending time in nature. These activities help me stay grounded and bring the same presence, curiosity, and balance that I strive to offer every person I work with.

If We Work Together

Starting therapy doesn’t require having everything figured out.

Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, repeating familiar patterns, or simply looking for a place to better understand yourself, therapy offers an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and move toward lasting change.

I aim to provide a thoughtful and compassionate space where healing can unfold naturally and at a pace that feels right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you specialize in trauma therapy?

Throughout my career, I found myself consistently drawn to working with people whose struggles could not be fully understood by symptoms alone. Beneath anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, or relationship difficulties were often histories of overwhelming experiences that had never been fully processed. That realization shaped the direction of my practice and continues to guide my work today.

What is your style as a therapist?

My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and trauma-informed. Rather than focusing on what is “wrong,” we work together to understand how your experiences have shaped your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and sense of self. Therapy is always tailored to your unique history, strengths, and goals.

Do I need to have experienced major trauma to benefit from therapy?

Not necessarily. Many people seek therapy because they notice recurring patterns such as anxiety, perfectionism, emotional disconnection, difficulty trusting others, relationship challenges, or feeling stuck in ways they can’t fully explain. Together, we’ll explore what may be contributing to these experiences and whether therapy can help.
